North-West University
I hold a B.Sc in Health Sciences with a major in Human Movement Science and Nutrition, which I completed in 2005, followed by an honours degree in Nutrition in 2006, both from the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. Subsequently, I enrolled for a master's degree in Nutrition in 2006 at the North-West University (NWU), where my MSc built upon the haemostasis research of my honours project. After completing my master's degree, I continued with a PhD in Nutrition, investigating the dietary and genetic determinants of the cardiovascular disease risk factor homocysteine, as well as gene-diet interactions influencing this protein. I received the Unilever Nutrition Award for the best oral presentation on Nutrition Research at the South African Nutrition Congress in 2010, where I presented my nutrigenetic findings on alcohol in relation to homocysteine. Following my PhD, I participated in a staff exchange program of the European South African Partnership for Nutrition Research and conducted research on vitamin D status in the elderly at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. While there, I attended several bioinformatics and personalized medicine workshops and a nutrigenetics/genomics course. Since 2010, I have been employed as a permanent lecturer in the School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences’ Nutrition department at NWU, and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2012 and to associate professor in 2018.
